Today on June 7th we witness food safety to be recognized as an internationally proclaimed event by the United Nations. The day when we remind ourselves that Food Safety is everyone’s business which is also the inaugural theme for the very first International Food Safety Day celebration.

We take it for granted that processed foods are safe to eat. It is our responsibility as a consumer to examine the food before purchasing it. Each year people suffer from foodborne illnesses and diseases worldwide, due to outbreaks and unsafe handling of food by both the consumers and the processors. Concepts of food fraud, food insecurity, and economically motivated adulteration should be scrutinized strictly by the processors, manufacturers, vendors, and federal regulatory bodies.

The food safety was celebrated by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority India) in India on 7th June 2019, they developed a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) kit for school children to detect adulterants in food and develop a sense of food safety at a young age. They plan to launch a device which can detect adulterants in edible oil based on the principle of Raman Spectroscopy.

I sincerely hope this day could bring about change and awareness among people to consume food that is safe and be responsible for not involving in food wastage. As food safety and wastage are the two pressing issues of this century. Let’s work towards making our food safer and better.
